The Hermitage Route

The Hermitage Trail is a magnificent loop trail that circles the village and takes you through the religious and farming history of Alhama.

Difficulty: Moderate (some steep climbs).
Estimated Time: 2 to 3 hours.

Along the way, you will discover whitewashed chapels (San Antonio, San Juan, San Marcos) with stunning views. The highlight of the walk is the Moorish hermitage (Morabito), a unique circular vestige crowning the hills above Alhama.

Sierra de Gádor and Cycling

The Sierra de Gádor mountain range rises like an alpine wall immediately behind Alhama, creating perfect microclimates and playgrounds for experienced hikers and mountain bikers.

Trails wind up to altitudes of over 2000m. The Cascade Park is a perfect cool stop on the way back, with picnic tables under tall palm trees and an impressive waterfall right next to the town center.

Panoramic Viewpoints

The best free activity in Alhama de Almería: stroll at dusk to watch the immensity of the valley light up with the colors of the sunset.

Difficulty: Very easy, town walk.

Start with La Puente, an immense neoclassical aqueduct bridge that you can walk across for a dizzying view. Then head up to the main church and walk towards the Mirador de la Era la Coca, an open square suspended over the canyons.

Las Canales de Padules

One of the favorite excursions for locals during the hot months! Located just a 20-minute drive away, the "Canales de Padules" are natural spring pools carved by the erosion of the Andarax River.

You will literally walk "in" the river, knee-deep (or chest-deep in some pools!), surrounded by lush vegetation rare in this part of Spain. Good water shoes are highly recommended.

Buggy Tours (Buggy Almería)

Explore the canyons of the Tabernas desert like in Mad Max. These all-terrain buggies are driven by you (driving license required), while an expert guide leads you through dry riverbeds and wild west areas.

There are several companies around, with **Buggy Almería** being one of the most popular options.

Oasys MiniHollywood & Zoological Reserve

The largest Wild West theme park in Europe! This iconic site includes the authentic movie sets built by Sergio Leone (with bank robberies and can-can dances).

Beyond the western folklore, the ticket also includes access to a massive and fantastic zoo with hundreds of species saved from extinction, featuring great enclosures and pools for the animals.

Balneario San Nicolás (Thermal Spa)

The historical jewel of Alhama. This thermal complex uses medicinal waters that gush naturally at 47.5°C (117°F), used and appreciated since Roman times.

The hotel-spa offers treatments for rheumatism, osteoarthritis, and respiratory tracts, as well as pure relaxation sessions in its historical marble pool.

Los Millares Archaeological Site

Widely considered one of the most important Copper Age sites in Europe. This location features a fortified village, a necropolis with more than 80 megalithic tombs, and a complex defense system with 13 forts.

The interpretation center and reconstructed huts provide deep insight into life over 5000 years ago.
